Buganda Kingdom's Kabaka's 70th Birthday Run: A Success Story in HIV/AIDS Fight

The Buganda Kingdom has achieved a remarkable milestone in its battle against HIV/AIDS, thanks to the Kabaka's 70th Birthday Run. This annual event, which has been a tradition since 2020, has raised a staggering 2.9 billion Ugandan shillings, significantly contributing to the reduction of HIV infection rates across the region. Since the campaign's inception, the prevalence of HIV has decreased by an impressive 78%, with only three districts now facing notable challenges.

The Kingdom's efforts have been praised for their transparency and tangible impact. Katikkiro Charles Peter Mayiga highlighted the consistent decline in HIV infections, attributing it to the Kabaka's dedication to the cause. However, he also emphasized the need for continued vigilance among the population, encouraging regular testing, protection, and treatment adherence.

The funds raised have been allocated strategically, with 800 million shillings directed towards community sensitization, 2.1 billion shillings for testing and awareness programs, 295.7 million shillings for HIV testing kits, 537 million shillings for field operations, and 723 million shillings for county-level mobilization. This comprehensive approach has been instrumental in the campaign's success.

Robert Waggwa Nsibirwa, the Second Deputy Katikkiro and Minister of Finance, underscored the importance of these initiatives in transforming lives and building stronger systems. He also highlighted the remaining challenges, particularly in districts like Masaka, Kyotera, and Kalangala, where HIV transmission rates are still a concern. The Kingdom's commitment to eradicating HIV/AIDS by 2030 remains unwavering.

UNAIDS Representative Jonathan Mubangizi praised Buganda's leadership in community-driven HIV prevention, noting the steady decline in infections. Uganda AIDS Commission Chairperson Lay Canon Dr. Ruth Ssenyonyi and Majestic Brands CEO Remmie Kisakye also acknowledged the campaign's positive impact, with Kisakye expressing gratitude to sponsors and partners for their support over the past 12 years.

The campaign's theme, 'Men for Good Health to Save the Girl Child,' continues to inspire men and youth to take charge of their health and contribute to social transformation. With five years of progress, Buganda Kingdom is poised to continue its fight against HIV/AIDS, ensuring a healthier and more prosperous future for its communities.
