Can you imagine a retired legend stepping back into the Octagon? That's the question on everyone's mind after Daniel Cormier, a name synonymous with UFC greatness, made a surprising claim. Cormier, a former two-division champion and now a respected commentator, has been retired for over five years. But when asked if he'd consider a fight in today's heavyweight division, his answer sparked immediate interest.
Cormier, known for his incredible wrestling and dominant performances, retired after a loss to Stipe Miocic at UFC 252 in 2020. During his impressive career, 'DC' only tasted defeat against Jon Jones and Miocic. He was a force to be reckoned with at heavyweight, where his wrestling prowess often led him to victory.
So, who would Cormier step into the cage with today?
Cormier boldly stated he'd take on Jailton Almeida, currently ranked #5 in the heavyweight division. He even went as far as to say, "It’s a wrestling match. I got a chance… Me and Jailton, wrestling match inside of an octagon. It’s very safe. I can call the next one."
But here's where it gets controversial... Almeida recently suffered a split decision loss to Alexander Volkov at UFC 321, despite securing seven takedowns and controlling the fight for nearly eleven minutes.
This loss ended Almeida's two-fight winning streak. Cormier's confidence in a wrestling match against Almeida is interesting, given Almeida's recent performance.
What do you think? Would a wrestling match between Cormier and Almeida be as safe as Cormier suggests? Do you agree with Cormier's assessment, or do you think Almeida's current form would pose too much of a challenge? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
